Mayor Maymay Conferred a “ Dr. Jose P. Rizal Award for Excellence” in Public Service

A n o t h e r feather on the cap of Mayor Maymay Barcelona and of the City – a “Dr. Jose Rizal Award for Excellence” in Public Service.

The award was conferred by the Manila Times on the hard working achiever mayor of Escalante city last June 19. The awarding ceremony, held at the Awat Keng Auditorium, Kaisa-Angelo King Heritage Center, Intramuros, Manila was timed with the birth date of the country’s National Hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, after whom the award was named.

Ambassador John K. C. Ng Donates 50 Housing Units in the City
April 2005

Ambassador John K. C. Ng, Presidential Envoy on Chinese Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, has donated 50 housing units to the City of Escalante.

The d o n a t i o n, amounting 2.5 Million, is accessed through the Kaisa Para sa Kaunlaran, Inc., a Filipino – Chinese National Civic Organization.

Aside from Ambassador Ng, another major donor is the Negros Kaisa, Inc., a Filipino – Chinese Civic Organization in Negros Occidental, which is donating ten (10) units.

Amherst’s Rotary Donates Books in CD’s to City Library
March 2005

Now the City Library has more educational and informative materials to offer to the reading public.

Mayor Jerry Hallee of Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada turned over to Mayor Barcelona a leather case full of CDs in a simple ceremony held at the city hall last March 7, 2005.

The CDs contain materials on various fields of interests. Among them are the 2003 Encyclopedia Britannica, Encarta 2000, Atlas Pack, 1997 Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, Compton’s New Century Encyclopedia, Asteroids, and 31 other books, guides and reference materials.

68-Million “City Mall” to be Fully Operational by June
February 2005

The Escalante public market has been transformed into a modern facility, now popularly known as the “City Mall”, through a series of renovations undertaken by the Barcelona Administration in the last five years.

The first phase of the renovation took place in 2000 when Mayor Barcelona secured a 12 Million grant from the Office of the President. The grant financed the construction of the 3-storey Front Building, and two additional 2-storey buildings, each containing 9 stalls in each floor.

MAYOR BARCELONA ORDERS DEMOLITION of ILLEGAL STRUCTURES at DANAO RIVER
January 2005

Danao River is the biggest and the most vital river of the city. Originating from the mountain barangays of the town of Toboso, the river cuts through the middle of the Escalante territory like a knife on a cake. From Brgy. Pinapugasan, it snakes through ten other barangays of the city and empties its waters into the Tañon Strait.

At the mouth of the river at Sitio Danao, Brgy. Old Poblacion are located four ports, one government and two private. The private ports are the Marañon port, the Yap port and farther down below the Barcelona RORO port; The government port is the Port of Danao run by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA). Except for the Barcelona and the Yap RORO ports, the Marañon and the Danao ports are virtually dead.
