Farming, fishing, handicrafts, and retail merchandising are the major livelihood sources, while livestock, swine and poultry raising provide additional income. Traditional fishing methods are now supplemented by fish farming in fishponds, fish pens and fish cages. Fishponds now occupy 1,537 has. For bangus production; 31 has. of prawn farms, and 28 has. for salt beds.

Of more than a thousand business enterprises, 572 of these do business in the Escalante Public Market. Various businesses have opted to do business in the surrounding vicinity along the length of the main thoroughfare. Among these business are 4 lending institutions, 9 pawnshops, 3 gasoline stations, 4 hardware stores, 2 glassware retailers, 3 big grocery stores, and 8 drugstores. Several business are open on a 24-hour basis.
